On 'noise'<\/h3>
'Cutting through the noise' is an expression that suggests noise is a negative thing. It's a distraction. Noise doesn't have any proper form, it's not specific and it won't get things done. A noisy street is a nuisance but somehow, during the final night of a thumping music festival, when the biggest headliner is just about to finish their set, 'make some noise' is a call for participation, to give all you've got and show the world what you're passionate about, as loud as you can. <\/p>
The noise of a roaring crowd is made up of individual voices. If we all shout whatever we feel like, regardless of whether it's poorly researched, prejudiced, grounded in myth or in reason, all we will make is noise. But the sound of a crowd of millions chanting the same words over and over? That's a collective voice. It's noisy for sure, but it's intentional and it's collaborative. It has a purpose and it demands to be heard. <\/p>
We're thinking carefully about The Noise We Make and the noise we want to be a part of.
